Obama’s Speech on Race

Obama’s Speech on Race

On the peripheries of this speech there’s plenty with which to disagree. (He’s wrong on trade, especially NAFTA, and he overstates the outsourcing case). But never have I heard such a cogent, nuanced presentation on race by a politician of any stripe. He’s exactly right.

  1. I agree on the race speech. Unfortunately, I’m not sure if this country is ready for an honest discussion of race. Both sides are forced into simplistic positions or they aren’t listened to. My worry here is that the Hannity’s of the world will prevail on these questions for a bit longer into the future, alas (where expressing any black anger is a clear sign of hatred for America and a sign of black racism). We should be capable of a more sophisticated dialog, but I’m not hopeful.

  2. Agreed. A few months in the big city, especially so close to the ghetto as Hyde Park, is all one needs to see that we are really, really far from racial reconciliation.
