When there is a question as to whether a man is good, one does not ask what he believes, or what he hopes, but what he loves.

Is it good because he loves it, or does he love it because it’s good?
Actually I’m not being flippant; this question has a particular importance in studying Augustine’s theory of the good!
I don’t know man… I just thought it was a nice quotation!!!
Seriously, though - I would hope that it would be that he loves it because it’s good. Is there some question about how Augustine views this? (Your question sounds a little like the Euthyphro problem.)
